CPI(ML) expresses deep concern over the mob attack on the homes of African nationals in Dwarka, Delhi. The African nationals had a narrow escape. The mob had gathered following racist rumours of child kidnapping and cannibalism.

It is condemnable that the Delhi Police has denied the attack was motivated by racism. In fact, associating African and Black people with cannibalism is pure racism.

THE #MeToo movement may have started recently, but it is not new to India. The fight against sexual harassment began when Bhanwari Devi, a saathin in a village in Rajasthan, was raped for doing her job — stopping child marriage. Every working-class woman, like Bhanwari Devi, has a #MeToo story to share. Job insecurity, low wages — upon which her entire family is dependent, no social security benefits, and added to which are caste and class oppression. This silences women workers from speaking about their experiences of sexual harassment.

THE Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently issued a pointed warning against the dangers of Government interference in the autonomy of regulatory institutions like the RBI. Such a public chastisement of the Government by a senior official of the RBI - clearly with the approval of his colleagues at the RBI - is probably unprecedented, and is reminiscent of the unprecedented Press Conference by the four Supreme Court judges warning against Government interference in the Supreme Court.

BJP President Amit Shah has openly endorsed and instigated violence against the Kerala State Government if it continues to implement the Supreme Court verdict lifting the ban on the entry of women into the Sabarimala shrine.

Shah said the Court should not pass orders which cannot be implemented, and warned that BJP cadres would ‘uproot’ the CPIM-led Government in Kerala if it arrested those fomenting violence to prevent women’s entry into Sabarimala.

ON 11 October, environmentalist G.D. Agarwal passed away. It was the 111th day of his indefinite fast to ensure that the river Ganga gets to flow ‘aviral’ (unfettered) and clean. In the past few months, Agarwal had written three letters to Prime Minister Modi, highlighting carefully articulated and specific demands to tackle the ecological crisis facing the beleaguered Ganga. Some of these demands have been raised by several environmental organizations and people’s movements in Uttarakhand.

IT is shameful and condemnable that the BJP and RSS are seeking to attack the Left Government for upholding the Supreme Court verdict lifting the ban on the entry of little girls and women between the ages of 10-50 into the Sabarimala temple. A BJP leader - actor Kollam Thulasi - has declared that women entering Sabarimala will be “torn into two pieces.” Women journalists and students covering the Sabarimala issue are being violently attacked and prevented from even approaching the vicinity of the temple. The Kerala police is failing to act against the violent mobs.

THE CPI(ML) condemns the repression unleashed by the police on farmers who were attempting to march to the Gandhi Samadhi to confront the Modi Government over its betrayal of promises to farmers. From Mandsaur to Delhi, farmers demanding their due are being met with lathis and bullets, loot and lies.
