A CPIML team led by Surendra Prasad Singh and Asif Hoda, visited Mohammed Sarjamul Qureshi, a 55-year-old survivor of a mob lynching attempt, currently receiving treatment in a private hospital in Tajpur. Sarjamul Qureshi, a goat trader, was attacked by a mob of 40–45 men belonging to Hindu Rashtra Ekta Manch on August 16, 2024, when he went to Mau Bazaar in Vidyapatinagar to buy goats. The mob, which was led by a local ward councillor and Hindutva right-wing leader Chandan Jha attempted to lynch Qureshi, under the pretext of carrying beef.
The mob severely beat Qureshi, stole Rs. 65,000 from him, and vandalized his motorcycle. The police were alerted and were able to save Qureshi’s life. However, despite the violence occurring in the presence of the police, no FIR was registered initially. It was only after the video of the incident went viral that the police registered an FIR against unidentified individuals and also against social activists who shared the video under Section 66A of IT act.
As of now, no arrests have been made, even though individuals such as Chandan Jha, Roshan Jha, Amit Kumar Mahto, Satish Kumar Sah, and Sunny Jha were clearly visible in the video leading the mob lynching attempt against Qureshi.
The CPIML team met Qureshi and assured their solidarity and support in the fight for justice. The atmosphere of fear and attempts to stroke communal tension in the region following the incident was quite visible.
The party has called for immediate action against the perpetrators and demanded a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the survivor.
