Activists Join Hands To Save Patna Museum

Tens of social, academic and political activists joined hands to give a call to save Patna museum under the banner of Save Patna Museum Struggle Committee. The committee raised the demand that Bihar gov should proactively work to save the historical reserve of the museum for future generations. If there has been illegal diversion or theft from the museum than steps should be taken for the recovery of the historic artefacts and manuscript. The Patna museum is well known especially for preserving the artefacts, manuscripts and historical accounts related to Buddhist culture. Much of the text is in Pali language and demand was raised to make efforts with help of experts to study them. The names of great stalwarts Dr. Sachchidanand Sinha, Dr. Kashi Prasad Jaiswal and the eminent scholar Rahul Sankritayan had been associated with construction of Patna Museum and it is the duty of every Bihar resident to save the legacy of great personalities.

This 106-year-old historical building of Patna Museum has a large store of 75 thousand archaeological items, ancient coins and thousands of terracotta pieces. But the state government is not paying proper attention for its care, protection, and promotion. For the last several years, Patna Museum has been a victim of government's neglect and indifference. It is in this light that those who care for the legacy of the museum have come forward to save the museum and retain its autonomy. They are demanding that the plan to merge the museum with Bihar museum by building a grand underground tunnel worth hundreds of crores should be scrapped and steps should be taken to catalogue and safeguard the historical items that the museum is holding. Earlier in 2007, CBI had to take the help of Interpol in the case of theft of archaeological items from Patna Museum. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the Central and State Governments to take adequate precautions in protecting the items of archaeological importance of Patna Museum.
