Dozens of CPIML activists were taken into custody in Behali of Biswanath district of Assam on 28 February for holding a protest, after duly informing the adminsitration, against a so called encounter of Dembeswar Musahary.
A mere incharge of the police outpost has the audacity to issue a legal notice, which is of course an illegal act, and called a peaceful democratic protest 'illegal and unconstitutional'. The demonstration was held following a call given by the CPIML against rising incidents of encounters and demanding justice for the family of the deceased. Although similar protests were also held in Jorhat, Rajgarh and other districts.
Bibek Das, CPIML Assam state secretary, has condemned the arrests calling it a design of structured and systemic atrocities on democratic expression of dissent by the Assam government. He called it a criminal mindset of the Himanta Biswa Sarma regime in Assam and demanded the release of all arrested protesters and withdrawal of criminal proceedings against them by the police.
