CPIML and All India Progressive Women’s Association have strongly condemned the demeaning statements of Harjot Kaur, Chairperson and MD of Bihar’s Women and Child Development Corporation, made during an interaction workshop with school girls in Patna. AIPWA said that the apology given by Harjot Kaur is not enough and she must be removed from her present post immediately. She had spoken with a BJP-ised mindset showing her indignation towards the girls she was supposed to work for their welfare.
She spoke like a BJP spokesperson when she said that poor must get rid of their habit of demanding freebies, such a person is not fit to carry out the slogan ‘Sashakt Beti, Samriddha Bihar’ (empowered daughters, for a prosperous Bihar).
CPIML has asked the Finance Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary for her immediate removal calling her statements not only very insensitive but also full of hatred towards the poor. Toilets in schools for the girls, and provision of free sanitary pads are very simple and basic needs meant to preserve and respect the dignity but for her these are talks to laughing out loud which is demeaning and insulting.
When one girl complained of missing doors in the toilets, Harjot Kaur retorted that ‘you don’t even have separate toilets at home’ so why ask here! When one suggested for provision of sanitary pads, MD again retorted ‘then you will also ask for jeans, trousers, shoes, and condoms too’. Girls tried to argue about the responsibility of the government, Harjot Kaur suggested them to ‘go to Pakistan’!
The CPIML, AIPWA and AISA have demanded from the Bihar government to remove such MD from her post, and to provide fully equipped toilets and free sanitary pads in every school in the state.
