More than 30 sanitation workers were denied duty in JNU on 1 September. After denying wages to workers for months, denying to implement Equal Pay for Equal Work order, denying to ensure their right to get regularised, the JNU administration came down to retrench sanitation workers. Number of workers in JNU are being reduced systematically for last four-five years resulting in inhuman work load on few workers.
Instead of increasing the work force to match the present need of the campus, the JNU admin decided to further reduce the numbers. The sanitation workers showed rock solid unity and went to the ad-block. The VC was forced to come down and meet the workers. She has promised no worker will be retrenched.
The AICCTU has appealed to the entire JNU community to remain vigilant and ensure that the VC stands up to her commitment. The AICCTU and AISA have also demanded a permanent assurance for no retrenchment of workers in future besides ensuring dignity and rights as well as immediate payment of pending wages and implementation of equal pay for equal work.
