ASHA Workers Protest Across Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand ASHA Health Workers Union (AICCTU) organized protests at various places in Uttarakhand and submitted memorandums to the Chief Minister on the following issues: failure of the government to pay honorarium as per the promise made by the CM on 31 August 2021; payment of arrears due for the Covid period; payment of other arrears due to ASHAs.

The ASHA Health Workers Union said that on 31 August 2021 at Khatima Camp the Uttarakhand Chief Minister had promised to fix an honorarium for ASHA workers and implement the proposals made by DG Health for ASHAs. But these promises have not yet been fulfilled a year on as on 31 August 2022.

ASHAs are the backbone of the Health Department. They are made to work to work for long hours are denied even minimum wages. This exploration will not be tolerated. The importance of their work must be recognized, they must be paid minimum wages and receive pension upon retirement. During the Covid period they were made to do Covid duty but have not been yet given the Covid allowance. They are being treated like unpaid labour.

The memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister made the following demands:

  1. Fulfill the promise made on 31 August 2021 to fix monthly honorarium for ASHAs and implement the proposals made by DG Health.
  2. Pass a resolution in the Assembly for minimum wages, status of health dept employees, pension upon retirement for all ASHA workers.
  3. Pay Covid allowance arrears immediately.
  4. Pay various other arrears without delay.
  5. Roll back the order to demand resubmission of old Corona records from ASHA workers.
  6. ASHA workers should not be forced to run the Sanjivani App and this order should be revoked.
