Anti-Repression Week in Uttar Pradesh

CPIML observed a protest week across Uttar Pradesh from 30 August to 5 September with the following demands: cancel remission of Bilkis Bano's convicted rapists and murderers; strict punishment for teacher who beat dalit student Indra Meghwal to death; arrest perpetrators of attacks on dalits in Hargaon (Sitapur) and punish police officers who slapped false cases on victims; release District Secretary Arjun Lal and others immediately. Dharnas, protests, marches and meetings were organized at Block, Tehsil and District level and memorandums were sent addressed to the President.

In the capital Lucknow a march was organized from Parivartan Chowk which was stopped mid-way by the police, after which the protest meeting was held on the road and memorandums to the President and Governor were submitted via the police officials. The meeting was addressed by District in-charge Ramesh Sengar, Radheshyam Maurya, Shivam, Anjali, Madhusudan Magan, Rajiv Gupta, Sarojini Bisht and others.

Protests, pamphlet distribution, meetings and marches were also organized in Ghazipur, Ballia, Devaria, Gorakhpur, Mirzapur, Jalaun, Lakhimpur Kheri, Azamgarh, Mau, Chandoli, Bhadohi, Banaras, Sonbhadra, Rae Bareli and Mathura.

Meanwhile, prominent party leaders including comrade Arjun Lal are still in jail in Hargaon, Sitapur. A mass protest against this was organized in Hargaon on 9 September.
