Trapped Women in Assam Observed Protest Day


Debt-trapped women observed Protest Day on 12 July at the call of Microfinance Shosan Birodhi Joutha Sangrami Mancha (It's an umbrella organisation of various struggling organisations fighting on this issue ) in various districts of Assam including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Golaghat, Nagaon, Morigaon, Hojai demanding waiving of microfinance loans of all debt-trapped women. They demanded that while waiving loans Government of Assam must ensure that the CIBIL score of all accounts already declared NPA would remain in good health, Government of Assam must organise all debt-trapped women in NRLM self-help groups by providing ₹10 lakhs as revolving fund and discuss the deplorable condition in the current budget session of Assam assembly. The CM of Assam Himanta Biswa Sharma has been adopting a divisive policy to contain the growing discontent since day one.

Earlier, a statewide signature campaign was organized in Assam on this issue and collected signatures were submitted to the MLAs of Mahajot asking them to raise this issue in the Assembly.

The Microfinance Institutions (Regulations of Moneylending) Act, 2020 brought by the government to stop the atrocities and harassment of women who are unable to repay the loans, remains ineffective in face of the hegemony of microfinance companies.
