CPIML blocked the Ara-Sasaram State Highway near Charpokhri in Bihar to protest against the deaths of 2 workers in road accidents on 17 May 2020. The road block was led by RYA President Manoj Manzil. He said that the deaths of workers in road accidents are not just accidents but massacres caused by criminal negligence of the government. The unplanned, unprepared Lockdown has caused appalling distress to workers.
The details of the deceased workers are as follows:
- Nand Kumar Ram (35 years), son of Nagdev Ram; husband of Phool Kumari Devi and father of Roshni Kumri (4) and Sarita Kumari (1 ½); resident of Barni village, Charpokhri Block.
- Godhan Kumar Ram (30 years), son of Bhikhari Ram, husband of Savita Devi, father of Indravati Kumari (6), Ajay Kumar (8), Pintu Kumar (4), and Anjali Kumari (2); resident of Siarua village, Jagdishpur Block.
The protesters demanded Rs 5 lakhs each to the families of the deceased, 5 decimal land, Indira Awas and Widow Pension for the aggrieved families. During the road block, the Charpokhri BDO, CO and Thana chief represented the administration at the talks and agreed to the demands made by the leaders. The road block was called off after a cheque for Rs 4 lakhs was given to the family of Nand Kumar Ram, while the Piro SDO promised to give the cheque for the deceased worker from Jagdishpur without delay.
