CPIML, AICCTU and AIPWA organized a protest on 18 July 2020 at the Udaipur Collectorate against Lockdown-induced distress and the Central government’s anti-people policies and for reinstatement of justice, dignity and rights for the people. Memorandums were submitted by CPIML and Construction Workers Association (affiliated to AICCTU) to the President and the Chief Minister via the Collector. A memorandum was also submitted addressed to the Collector on MNREGA issues and disbursement of sanitizer, soap and masks to workers at Labour Chowk. The memorandum to the CM demanded time-bound preparation of workers’ diary and immediate payment of due arrears in Mazdoor Welfare Board schemes. Earlier demands for 10 kg grains per person to all needy persons, keeping registration open for migrant workers and time-bound issue of ration cards under Food Security were also reiterated. Women in SHGs and workers’ families who have taken loans from micro-finance companies are unable to make repayments due to Lockdown-induced dire unemployment. We demand loan waivers for them and interest free loans to be given so that they can recoup their livelihoods.
Speaking on the occasion, District Secretary Chandradev Ola said that the unplanned Lockdown destroyed lives and livelihoods and though the common public helped the workers in distress, the government did nothing for them or for Corona preventive measures. AIPWA State Secretary Sudha Chaudhury said that the Corona-Lockdown crisis was turned into an opportunity to benefit capitalists and snatch away workers’ rights by abrogation of labor laws. AICCTU State Secretary Saurabh Naruka said that the government is using the current crisis as an excuse to hand over the country’s resources to private hands and sell off public sector units like railways, coal, insurance, BPCL, Air India and the banking sector.
The main demands in thememorandum are:
- Curb unemployment and pay Rs 10000 Unemployment Allowance for the Lockdown period.
- 200 days’ work and Rs 500 minimum wages under MNREGA; bring the scheme for the urban poor also.
- Stop selling the country’s assets; end privatization, corporatization and disinvestment.
- Slash petrol-diesel prices.
- End abrogation of Essential Goods Act.
- Withdraw abrogation of 44 labor laws and end 4-code enslavement of workers.
- End retrenchments, wage cuts, DA freeze and cuts in social security.
Present on the occasion were State Committee member Shankar Lal Chaudhury, Dr Raziya, Shyama, Laxmi, Nazma, Dev Bai, Rukhsana, Rihana, Shamim and others.
