25 Nov witnessed a wave of protest in Assam against anti-worker policies of BJP govt. The protests were called by the "Save Industry Save Workers” joint forum which has been formed by various trade union organisations working in industries including power, jute, paper, polyester, fertilizer and oil. Assam is facing closure of industries in many sectors since last few years. Recently, Jagirod and Cachar paper mills have been closed while two Jute mills in Namrup and Silghat are facing threats of imminent closure. The sword of privatisation is hanging over Assam state electricity board, Neepco and Numaligar Refinery.
Various trade unions and their umbrella organisations have come together to form the Save Industry Save Workers forum to fight against this spree of closures and privatisations of important industries to resist attacks on workers livelihoods.
Protests were held on 25 November in many important centers in Assam including in Namrup, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Behali, Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Dhuburi, Kaliabor, Dibrugarh, etc. A workers’ mass convention will be held on 1 December in Guwahati.
