ON 3 February, Left parties held a massive rally in Kolkata’s historic Brigade Parade Grounds. The rally - which was significantly larger than the one held by Mamata Banerjee and the TMC at the same grounds on January 19 - was addressed by General Secretaries of the various Left parties including Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary, CPIM; Sudhakar Reddy, General Secretary CPI; Dipankar Bhattacharya, General Secretary CPIML Liberation; Kshiti Goswami, General Secretary RSP; and Debabrata Biswas, General Secretary Forward Bloc; as well as CPI(M) leader and former State Minister, Deblina Hembrem.
Addressing the Rally, CPI(ML) General Secretary Comrade Dipankar spoke about the betrayal of people’s rights and aspirations by the Modi Government at the Centre and the Mamata Government in West Bengal. He spoke of the threats to the Constitution and democracy posed by the Modi Government, the BJP and the Sangh. He said that the massive rally proved how deep and strong the Left roots are in Bengal, in spite of the Left being out of power. He pointed out that the CPI(ML) had been critical of various policies of the Left Front Government in West Bengal even while supporting some policies. However the need of the hour now was a revolutionary Left unity to take on the fascist forces and oust the disastrous Modi regime in 2019.
