AISA has been asserting the rights of students from the most deprived and oppressed sections in the drought-ridden and backward Rayalaseema region comprising four districts of Andhra Pradesh: Kadapa, Kurnool, Chittoor and Anantapur. The Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu hails from this region but it remains backward as ever.
The students and youth and people of the region have been demanding that AP be granted special status after its bifurcation; and that Rayalaseema be granted Rs 1.5 lakh crore rupees for development; and that a steel plant be set up at Kadapa.
AISA has been holding campaigns in colleges and hostels to hold the Government accountable to its promises on employment, reimbursement of fees, scholarships, and mid-day meals for inter and degree college students.
Four comrades - Ramanayya from CPI(ML), Rajesh and Chandra from RYA, and Kalyan from AISA sat on a hunger strike from 6-9 August demanding a Steel Plant for Kadapa. The hunger strike ended when the Deputy Collector gave an assurance that their demand would be met.
