The CPIML warmly congratulates workers and trade unions across India for making the call for a General Strike issued by Central Trade Union Organisations a great success. The General Strike was observed in protest against the Four Labour Codes that place millions of workers outside the ambit of labour laws and against rampant privatisation of Public Sector Units.
The striking workers demanded scrapping of the four Labour Codes and the Essential Defence Services Act (EDSA); abandoning all privatisation plans and scrapping of the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP); income support of Rs.7500 per month to all non-income tax-paying families; increased allocation for MGNREGA and extension of the employment guarantee programme to urban areas; universal social security for all informal sector workers; statutory minimum wages and social security cover for Anganwadi, ASHA, mid-day meal and other scheme workers; full protection, and insurance cover, for frontline workers serving the people in the midst of the pandemic; regularisation of all contract workers and scheme workers and restoration of the Old Pension Scheme; taxing the rich to increase public investment in agriculture, education, health and other crucial public services; and a stop to price rise as well as reduction of Central excise duty on petroleum products.
The General Strike received such widespread support and participation because the demands strike a chord with all sections of Indian people who are suffering the brunt of the Modi regime’s anti-poor policies.
The General Strike’s also reflects a determination among India’s working class to resist and defeat the Modi regime’s Islamophobic agenda.
Onwards to even greater unity, resistance, and success in the struggles ahead!
