- AIPWA Statement
Anti-government protests have been on going in Iran for more than 3 months after Mahsa Amini's arrest by morality police for not wearing hijab properly and her death in police custody. After thousands of people were injured and more than 300 people died in the suppression of these demonstrations now the prosecutor General of Iran has announced the dissolution of the morality police.
This is a victory for Iranian women. However, it hasn't been officially announced by the government yet. Irani official has said that the issue is being reviewed but it is not clear whether any change will be made to the Hijab Law. Meanwhile, house of Alnaz Rekabi, an Iranian sport climber who participated in an international contest without a head scarf was demolished by the local authorities.
Iranian women's, youth's and democracy loving people's movement forced the govt to disband the morality police but this is a partial victory and the "Women- Life - Freedom" campaign in Iran continues. We are standing with the women of Iran who are fighting for their demands of right to wear or not wear hijab, education, employment and equal participation in public life.
