Kisan Sansad’s Final Women’s Session


On Quit India day (9 August), the farmers’ parliament (Kisan Sansad) held its 13th and concluding session – a session for women representatives alone – demanding that corporates quit agriculture and Modi quit the PM’s chair. The Kisan Sansad passed a unanimous resolution expressing no confidence in BJP led government.

The no-confidence motion was tabled in the House on 6th of July. On 9 August, the Kisan Parliament had four sessions chaired by Dr Ranvir Kaur Bhangu, Reeman Nain, Usha Rani, Sunita Tikait, P Krishnammal, Sudesh, Jasbir Kaur Natt and Maureen Kaleka. Economist Dr Anupama Punjabi of the University Patiala, activist Navsharan Kaur, AIPWA Secretary Kavita Krishnan, CPIML Central Committee member Kavita Krishnan, AIPWA leader from Lucknow Meena Singh, Punjab Kisan Union leader Jasbir Kaur Natt, AISA and farmers’ movement activist Navkiran Natt, addressed the house among many others. The speakers held the Modi regime responsible for patronising Hindutva terrorism, Pegasus spying, erosion of labour laws, endangering of India’s food security, and for selling out agriculture, healthcare and education to corporate profiteers.

The House also resolved to adjourn the Parliament Sine die in view of the preparations of next SKM programme i.e. 15th August to be celebrated as Kisan Majdoor Azaadi Sangram Divas.

Mahila Sansad (Women’s Parliament) and Kisan Sansad events in solidarity with the farmers’ movements were also held at Patna and Banaras. At the Patna event, Professor Bharti S Kumar was designated the Speaker. Bills to strengthen labour laws in favour of workers; ensure the right to health as a fundamental right; put a cap on prices of cooking gas and food; were proposed by participants. The event was addressed by AIPWA General Secretary Meena Tiwari who said that the citizens of India will struggle to make the mock parliament a reality.
