Veteran CPI and NFIW leader Comrade Primla Loomba breathed her last on 24 June 2019. Born in 1924, she spent the most part of her 95 years in the communist movement and women’s movement, right from the very beginnings of these movements.
In her youth she was active in the freedom movement, and was drawn into the communist movement. She remained a lifelong communist, active till her last breath. Till her very last days, she could be seen at every significant protest in Delhi. She was especially active in the anti-communal movement and the women’s movement.
A schoolteacher and educationist in Delhi, Pimmi ji (as Comrade Primla was called by those who knew her) had spoken up for the rights of young students in her school who were supporters of the Naxalite movement in the 1970s. She was a fervent defender of students’ right to dissent - a right that is rarely respected in Indian schools but which Pimmi ji respected far more than conformity.
Her friendly, down-to-earth nature and calm commitment to people’s struggles won her the respect, friendship and love of people of all ages and walks of life.
