Delhi’s Chief minister recently announced an increase in the wages of DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) workers, a move hailed as a result of the relentless struggles of workers, especially women employees. However, the DTC Workers Unity Centre (AICCTU) has cautioned workers to remain vigilant until the announcement is implemented, citing previous delays caused by the ongoing tussle between the Chief Minister and the Lieutenant Governor in Delhi.
The union has emphasised that symbolic gestures such as wage increases must not overshadow core demands, including regularising contract workers, equal pay for equal work, increasing the number of DTC-owned buses, and halting privatisation efforts. DTC Workers Unity Centre criticised the government’s growing alignment with corporate interests, pointing to the financial strain on the corporation due to payments to private companies like Tata and Leyland while simultaneously pushing for privatisation.
The union has called on workers to strengthen their fight. As part of its ongoing campaign, it organised a gate meetings across depots on 2 December, aiming to intensify mobilisation by 15 December. Workers are urged to actively participate in these meetings to ensure their voices are heard and their demands are met.
Key Demands of the DTC Workers Unity Centre:
1. Regularisation of all contract workers.
2. Equal pay for equal work.
3. Expansion of DTC’s own fleet.
4. Immediate halt to privatisation of DTC.
