The All India Kisan Mahasabha (AIKM) organised a Sankalp Sabha in honour of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh's birth anniversary in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan on September 27. The event took place at Hashmi Nagar, near the Bakra Road railway crossing, with renowned mathematician and philanthropist Dr. Ghasiram presiding over the function. During the meeting, Dr. Ghasiram laid the foundation stone for the Kisan-Mazdoor Bhawan on land donated by him.
Addressing the assembly, Rajaram Singh, the National General Secretary of AIKM and CPIML Member of Parliament, condemned the Modi government’s ploy to hand over the agriculture to the corporates. He highlighted the significant farmers' movement that lasted for 13 months on the borders of Delhi against three pro-corporate farm laws, which ultimately forced the government to back down and withdraw the laws. He asserted that the ruling party’s campaign to defame farmers and toiling masses of this country would no longer be tolerated, vowing to strengthen the farmers' struggle both in the Parliament and in the streets.
Sudama Prasad, National Organisational Secretary of AIKM and Member of Parliament pointed out the immense challenges faced by sharecroppers. He emphasised the ongoing struggle to register sharecroppers so they can access government benefits. He also criticised fraudulent companies like Sahara India for exploiting the hard-earned money of the working class and pledged to continue to raise these issues in Parliament.
Prem Singh Gehlawat, National Vice President of AIKM, mentioned that the farmers' movement has gained nationwide momentum following the martyrdom of six farmers in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. He stated that the demand for legal guarantees for Minimum Support Price (MSP) has become a popular rallying cry among over 500 farmer organisations that constitute the united farmers’ front. He said that AIKM and other organisations are committed to intensifying their struggle for the rights and dignity of farmers.
Gurunan Singh, National Secretary of AIKM from Punjab, urged the assembled farmers to take a pledge on Bhagat Singh's birth anniversary to fiercely protect Indian agriculture and farmers from corporate exploitation.
Shankar Lal Chaudhary, Rajasthan state secretary of the CPIML and comrades from different regions also participated in the meeting. Following the meeting, a rally proceeded to the Jhunjhunu Central Cooperative Bank, where demonstrators submitted a 15-point memorandum to the district collector. The demands included:
Legal guarantees for MSP as per the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations.
Bringing Yamuna Canal water to Jhunjhunu district as per the 1994 agreement.
