Condemns Police Detention

CPIML has expressed its solidarity with climate justice activists from Ladakh, including prominent leaders Sonam Wangchuk and Sajjad Kargili, who were detained by Delhi Police on October 1 while en route to a planned march at Rajghat on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

The peaceful march, which aimed to highlight the urgent climate issues facing Ladakh and demand rights for its residents, including Ladakh to be brought in the 6th Schedule of the Constitution, was abruptly halted at the Singhu Border by police forces.

Activists have voiced their deep disappointment with the Modi administration, which had previously promised development and empowerment for Ladakh. Many feel that instead of fostering growth and preserving local rights, the government has been systematically undermining the existing entitlements of the Ladakhi people.

Sonal Wangchuk, environmentalist and educator, has been at the forefront of advocating for climate justice and inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. He expressed frustration over the government's actions, stating that their fight is for the rights of the land and people of Ladakh.

The climate marchers from Ladakh have also been vocal about the pressing environmental issues affecting their region, including glacial melting, erratic weather patterns, and the impacts of climate change on agriculture and traditional livelihoods.

Comrade Prem Singh Gehlawat, a senior leader of CPIML, met with some of the detained marchers at Delhi’s Narela and condemned the arbitrary detention of peaceful protesters. He emphasised that the government's actions are indicative of a larger pattern of suppressing dissent and undermining the voices of marginalised communities.

"The Modi government must release all detained marchers immediately and allow them to proceed to Rajghat for their peaceful demonstration on Gandhi Jayanti," he demanded. "This act of detaining individuals who are peacefully advocating for climate justice is unacceptable and should be condemned by all."

As the situation unfolds, CPIML and progressive sections continue to stand behind the Ladakh climate marchers and demand for their immediate release. They allow them to visit Rajghat on Gandhi Jayanti as part of their planned movement.
