The project to link the Par, Tapi and Narmada rivers and construct 7 big dams in Valsad, Dang, Tapi and a few adivasi-majority districts is being opposed by the adivasi community across South Gujarat. Some of the proposed dams, while not as high as the Sardar Sarovar Dam built on Narmada, are 2 to 2 1/2 times wider.
The construction of these dams will destroy the most of the adivasi habitations in South Gujarat and lakhs of families will be displaced. Lakhs of adivasi families do not have any papers for their ancestral cultivation lands and so will not get any compensation at all. Moreover, this project will cause unimaginable harm to the ecosystem of this forest region that is included in the 5th Schedule.
In this situation, a protest rally was organized on 21 March at the initiative of various adivasi organizations and adivasi leaders in South Gujarat. At the conclusion of the rally a delegation met the Kaprada Mamlatdar and demanded that the Par-Tapi-Narmada Linking Project should be immediately stopped and fully scrapped.
The leaders of the protest included Adivasi Mukti Morcha Gujarat convener Comrade Kamleshbhai Shravanbhai Gurav, Congress MLA from Vansda Jai Adivasi Mahasangh leaders and Umargam Taluka Adivasi Sangharsh Morcha leader Comrade Haresh Bhai.
