the Issue of Special Status of Bihar

There is nothing in the Budget that can bring people of Bihar out of the vicious cycle of poverty. CPIML Bihar state secretary Kunal has criticised the Union Budget 2024 for ignoring the sorry plight of the people of Bihar who desperately need special attention and economic package for the development of the state. He called this budget a betrayal by the BJP and surrender by the JDU which will never be forgiven by the people in the state. Ironically, the Modi government in its third term is very much dependent on the support of Bihar’s NDA MPs even then the Modi government has ignored the justified demand for a special status. This is an attack on the self-respect and dignity of 13 crores Biharis, said comrade Kunal. With the shameful surrender of JDU the demand for special status has been put into a so-called special package which has done nothing to improve the plight of the people in the state.

The ‘Purvodaya’ yojana being hyped in the budget is nothing but focussed primarily on the construction of highways to benefit corporate friends of the Modi regime. The common masses will not in any way be benefitted by this scheme in terms of employment generation or economic upliftment.

Any talk of development of Bihar without reforming agriculture and developing agro based industries will be a farce. This budget completely ignores the demands of sharecroppers in the state who constitute the biggest section of Bihar’s producers. The plight of rural workers, youth, scheme workers and other toiling sections has been ignored completely. Bihar’s economic development has never been on BJP’s agenda which is more inclined to keep Bihar poor in order to supply cheap labour for the corporates all over the country. Bihar will remain a cheap labour supply zone for the BJP regime and this must be opposed.

Recently released NITI Aayog report has revealed Bihar at the last spot in the development index. Last year’s socio-economic survey done by the state government had also exposed widespread poverty, homelessness, migration and debt trap. More than 95 lakh families in the state are forced to live below the poverty parameters without any governmental support. For such a sorry plight only the BJP-JDU regime in the state is solely responsible. These conditions justify the demand for the special status to Bihar.
